FAITH AND BELIEFS
- THE HOLY BIBLE We believe the Holy Bible was written by divinely inspired men, and it is a perfect treasure of heavenly instructions. It has God as its Author, salvation as its end and truth without mixture of error for its matter. In it, God reveals His actions in history, His character, work and teachings. It reveals the principle by which God will judge us. It is the supreme authority in all matters of Christian faith, conducts and practice. We should study and follow it in our daily lives, individually, in our homes, communities and our church. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, each believer may be led in interpretation of its truths for life applicable lessons, guidance and direction. Isa.8:16,20, 40:6-9, John 12:46-50, 20:30-31, 1Cor.10:11, 2Tim.2:15, 3:15-17, Heb.1:1-3, 2Pet.1:19-21
- THE ONLY TRUE GOD We believe there is only one God who is Self-existing, Eternal and Self-sufficient. He is the Creator of heaven and earth who has neither beginning nor end. He is All-knowing, All-wise, Almighty, Jehovah, Yahweh of Israel. He reveals Himself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit while continuing always to be one God. The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead and their co-equality in power and glory is a mystery which defies human understanding. Each Person of the Trinity executes distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption. To this God belong our highest love, reverence and obedience. Gen.1:1, Exo.6:3, 15:11, 20:2, Deut.6:4-6, 1Chron.16:29, Ps.29:1-2, 83:18, Mat.28:19, John 8:16-19, Rom.11:33-36, 2Cor.13:14
- THE FALL OF MAN We believe that man was created by God in His image in holiness for fellowship with Him and for His glory with the divine mandate of exercising dominion over every of God‘s other creatures. Man, by an act of disobedience, having been lured by the devil, fell from this holy, happy and victorious (dominion) state. In consequence of this, all men by nature, then by choice not by constraint are now sinners for whom the penalty is eternal death without defence or excuse. Gen.1:26-30, 3:16-19, Ps.8:4-6, Rom.3:21-23, 5:12-14, 6:23, Rev.4:11
- SALVATION We believe salvation is God’s redemption of the entire human race through the sacrificial death of Christ Jesus on the cross. It is purely by grace through faith. Each person may be redeemed to eternal life (ZOE)-the very life of God through individual repentance and trust in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Thus, Jesus Christ became the only Saviour—the only mediator between God and man. Anyone who has repented of his sins and has trusted Christ as described above is called a Christian. The awesome experience of salvation includes:Regeneration (New Birth): Repentance and faith are inseparable graces of God which result in man’s spiritual incorporation into the life of Christ. This experience is referred to as regeneration (new birth). In this experience one publicly commits his life and loyalty to Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord.Justification: This is God’s gracious and full acquittal upon the basis of His Righteousness ascribed to sinful man. It brings the believer into a relationship of peace and favour with God.Sanctification: This is the experience which begins with the new birth in which the believer is set apart and enabled by the Holy Spirit to grow in the likeness of Jesus Christ who was without sin and imperfection.Glorification: This is the final and blessed state of the believer. It is the blessed and glorious culmination of salvation both in the now and the hereafter.Deliverance: When one is united with Christ he is delivered from the kingdom of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s marvelous light. He is possessed by the Spirit of Christ and in Him the Righteousness of Christ dwells complete. Christ has won victory over satan and in His authority the Christian can stand against the evil forces of satan and his demons. Not even satan nor his demons can possess the redeemed child of God. Gen.3:15, 2Chron.7:14, Eze.33:11, Lam.3:40, Mat.1:21, 10:32-33, Luke1:68-69, 10:19, John3:14-21,36, 6:37,10:28, Acts3:19, 4:12, 10:43, 13:39,26:18, Rom.1:16-18, 3:21-26, 8:1-18,29-39, 10:9-10, 1Cor.6:11, 2Cor.3:18, Phil.2:12-13, Eph.1:19-23, 2:8-10, Col.1:13-14, 2:6-15, 1Tim.2:5-7, Heb.2:5-18, 4:14, 5:9-10, 9:11-15, 1Pet.1:1-3, 2:21-25, Rev.3:20,22:17
- PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS We believe that such only as endured to the end are true / real believers: that their persevering attachment to Christ in the face of trials, temptations, stumbling failures, tests and sins is the distinguishing feature between them and superficial professors. Those who have been saved through the gracious act of God in Christ are secured in Christ. The believer may fall into temptation and sin, grieve the Holy Spirit, bring reproach on the cause of Christ, yet following repentance; he is restored and kept by the power of God through faith to the end. This is God’s purpose of grace—the undeserved mercy of God—that a Christian, though he suffers for his sin, is restored to maintain a redeemed relationship with the forgiving Father God when he has fully repented. Isa.55:6-7, Mat.10:22,32, 24:12-13, John17:6-12,15, Acts 20:32, Rom.5:9-10, 8:24-39, 1Pet.1:3-5, 1John1:7-2:2
- PRAYER We believe in prayer as a means of communication, an essential tool for maintaining fellowship between God and man. It is a communion and fellowship with God through which a Christian listens and talks to God. Jesus by His example and teaching showed the importance of prayer. Prayer is worship involving adoration, thanksgiving, confession of sin, intercession and petition. Prayer is a welcome privilege to keep in tune with God and claim His promises by coming boldly in faith to the throne of grace and finding mercy and help for needs. When praying in accordance with God’s will in the name of Jesus Christ an answer is guaranteed. God promises the assistance of the Holy Spirit’s intercession when we know not how we ought to pray. When prayer is coupled with fasting it provokes manifestation of signs, wonders, miracles and healings. 1Sam.12:23, 1Chron.16:10-11, Ps.5:2-3, 55:17, Isa.58:6-12, Mat.6:9-13, 17:21, 26:41, Mark11:24-25, Luke18:1-8, John14:13-14, 15:7-8, 16:23-24, Rom.8:26-27, Phil.4:6, Eph.6:18, 1Tim.2:1-2,8, Heb.4:16, Jam.5:6, 1John5:14-15
- THE HOLY SPIRIT We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity—the Executive Power of God. He is the free Gift of God available to all believers as a seal guaranteeing their inheritance in Christ. We believe that His Presence, Power and Leading are essential for effective witnessing and the ministry of the gospel. The Holy Spirit illumines the heart of man to enable him to understand spiritual truth. He convicts of sin, of righteousness and of judgement. He calls men to repent from sin and come to the Saviour. He effects regeneration (new birth). He cultivates Christian character and bestows the spiritual gifts by which believers perform their service in the church and to the larger world (humanity). The presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is the assurance that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. The Holy Spirit comforts the believer in times of trouble and enlightens and empowers the believers for worship, evangelism and service. We believe in the full manifestation of both the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit and their relevance to the believers and the church of all ages. Luke24:49, John14:26, 16:7-15, Acts.1:8, 2:1-4, 16-21, 38-39, Rom.12:4-8, 1Cor.12&14, 2Cor.1:21-22, Gal.5:16, 18, 22-25, Eph.1:13-14, 4:8-16, 1John5:7-8
- THE CHURCH We believe in the church of God as the body of Christ. This, as seen in the New Testament, is a body of called out ones; a body of baptized believers in Christ who have covenanted with one another to worship, fellowship and serve God through Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of His church irrespective of denominations. We believe that the following are the main ordinances of the church:BAPTISM is the immersion of the believer in water in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. This act is for the one who has believed the gospel and is resolved to follow the will of God in Jesus Christ. It is the symbolic demonstration of the believer’s personal faith in the crucified, buried and risen Saviour. Baptism is an open testimony of the believer’s faith in Christ via which he gives evidence of his desire to die to sin, to bury his former unbelief and sin; and to his resurrection to a new life in the Lord Jesus Christ.HOLY COMMUNION was instituted by Jesus Christ as a memorial to Himself and His deliverance over the bondage of sins. Believers participate in the holy communion by eating bread which represents Jesus’ body and drinking from the cup (wine) which represents His blood. However, this must be preceded by solemn self-examination. As often as believers partake of the holy communion, they proclaim the Lord’s death and appropriate the virtues / benefits of redemption until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.ANOINTING OIL is a sacred tool in the hand of the believers. It was inaugurated for use in the Old Testament for the consecration of the priests. Its use in the New Testament is for communicating healing virtues to the sick and everyone oppressed of the devil. The Holy Spirit works through the medium of the oil to ensure the total comfort of the believers as they are changed into new persons after the order of Christ. Mat.16:15-19, 18:18-19, 26:26-30, 28:19-20, Acts 2:42-47, 14:23, 20:28, Rom.6:3-14, 1Cor.10:16,21, 11:23-30, 12:12-13, Eph.1:22-23, 2:19-22, 4:15, 5:23, Col.1:18, 2:9-10,12, Exo.30:25-31, 1Sam.10:1,6,9; 16:13, Isa.10:27, Mark 6:7-13, James 5:13-16, Rom.8:11, Mat.3:11-13
- EVANGELISM AND MISSIONS We believe the church of Christ Jesus (of which we are a part) exists to carry on the redemptive mission of Christ. The mission includes the proclamation of the gospel to every person and the nurturing of every believer in a Christ-like lifestyle (discipleship): that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting men’s sins against them, and He has committed to us—believers—the ministry of reconciliation. Compelled by Christ’s love received in regeneration, every redeemed child of God should see evangelism and missions as a duty and privilege to witness to the saving knowledge of Christ; and cooperate with others within the body of Christ to ensure the actualization of the Great Commission as we expand the kingdom of God on the earth. Mat.9:35-39, 10:1,5-16, 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, 2Cor.5:11,14,18-21
- PRIESTHOOD OF THE BELIEVER We believe that by virtue of a believer’s relationship with Jesus Christ, priesthood and competency of the soul to approach God directly through Christ is granted every believer. While recognizing Christ as the High Priest (the Bishop of our soul and the Captain of our salvation) and the only Mediator between God and man, the believer is a priest for himself and others, this does not minimize the role and function of ministers of God, but affirms the fact that besides Jesus Christ, Christians need no other to gain for themselves access to God or make His power available on the earth. Every Christian, as the new testament priest, can “come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find help in time of need.” Christians therefore constitute a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God’s peculiar people. Rom.12:1-2, Heb.4:14-16, 7:23-8:13, 10:19-23, 1Tim.2:5-7, 1Pet.2:5, 9, 25, Rev.1:6, 5:10, 20:6.
- STEWARDSHIP We believe that God is the source of all blessings both material and spiritual. All that we have and are we owed to Christ. Christians, therefore as trustee of all that they receive from Him, are under obligation to serve Him with their time, talents, gifts and material possessions. The scriptures teach that Christians should contribute of their possessions purposefully, cheerfully, regularly, systematically, proportionately and liberally for the spread of the gospel of Christ on the earth. Deut.12:5-6, 11-13, Mal.3:8-12, Mat.6:19-21, 25:14-29, Luke 12:16-21, Acts 2:44-47, 20:35, 1Cor.4:1-2, 6:19-20, Phil.4:10-19
- CHRISTIAN CITIZENSHIP We believe that God ordained civil government as a means by which men should live orderly and peacefully together. However, God is the Sovereign Ruler behind all nations. Christians individually should obey authorized government, regarding such authority as being for their own good. Punishment should be expected for disobedience. Christians should pray for those in authority respecting the position as given by God. Taxes required by government should be paid. These are payments for services rendered by government. Although believers must submit to and cooperate with constituted government, we believe that the law of God is eternal and unchanging rule over moral government, if basic choice must ultimately be made, believer must choose to obey God always rather than man. Dan.3:16-18, Luke 20:20-26, Acts 4:19-20, 5:29, Rom.13:1-7, 1Tim.2:1-4, Titus 3:1, 1Pet.2:13-17
- THE HOME We believe that home is a God-ordained institution for specific purposes with specific instructions in the Bible for proper fulfillment of those purposes. Christ is the ultimate head and man—the husband—the human head of the home. Love, respect, faithfulness, interdependence, obedience and submission are characteristics of specific responsibilities of husband, wife and their children to one another in the home. Blessings and joy are promised to those stakeholders who fulfill these God-given marriage / family life responsibilities. Marriages are to be monogamous between a man and a woman only with no room given to divorce or re-marriage after a divorce; rather restoration is advocated in case of divorce. Any conjugal relationship before or outside the marriage covenant relationship is condemned. Gen.1:26-31, 2:18-24, Prov.19:14, 22:6, 15, 31:10-31, Mal.2:14-16, Mark 10:2-12, 1Cor.7:1-40, 11:2-3, 8-12, Eph.5:21-6:4, 1Pet.3:1-7
- ANGELS We believe that Angels are supernatural beings (spirits) created by God. They may be, but are usually not, in bodily form. They are not God, nor equal with God; though they are higher than man they are not to be worshipped by man. Angels are known as ministering spirits sent forth to minister for the heirs of salvation. As God’s messengers, they may protect, deliver, guide, interpret God’s will, punish and execute God’s will towards men and nations. Some stand and worship God in His presence. Some became evil angels by deliberately rebelling against God; the chief of the rebels is called satan; his angels are sometimes called demons. These evil angels oppose God, seeking to defeat His will and plans. They seek to separate believers from God, hinder man’s welfare both temporal and eternal (but cannot do so, in moral and eternal matters, independent of man’s will), and can be limited by God. Gen.19:1, 9-13, Ps.91:11, 103:20, 148:2, Isa.14:12-15, Eze.28:11-19, Mat.28:18-19, Luke 10:19, 13:11, 16, 22:43, Col.2:13-15, 2Thess.2:4-9, Heb.1:6-7, 14, 2Pet.2:4, 11, Jude 6,13, Rev.5:11-12, 12:7-17 15.
- ETERNITY We believe in eternity as a continuation of a spiritual life either in heaven or in hell. Heaven is the future abode of the righteous—those redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus and persevere to the end. Heaven is an eternal place of glory, joy and reward for the saints of God. It is God’s own eternal dwelling place. Hell is the future abode of the unrighteous (sinners, unbelievers) that rejected Christ Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Hell is an eternal place of torment, groaning and gnashing of the teeth prepared for the devil, his angels (demons) and every of God’s enemies (sinners, unbelievers, the wicked). The door to eternity may be opened either by physical death or the second coming of Christ referred to as rapture. When physical death occurs, judgement will follow to separate the righteous to heaven and the unrighteous to hell. Christ Jesus will be the Judge and the Holy Bible will be the standard for His judgement. The second coming of Christ will be visible and personal. On that day, Christ will descend in His glory from heaven with the cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ will rise first, and then those who are still alive and are Christ’s shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. The wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment in hell and the righteous to endless joy in heaven on the basis of acceptance by faith or rejection by disobedience of Christ’s blood purchased righteousness. Ps.9:7-8, 96:13, Mat.24:3,14,27,36, 25:31-46, Luke 16:19-31, John 3:14-21, 5:22-23, Acts 17:31, Rom.2:16, 2Tim.4:1, 1Cor.15:17-19,50-53, 1Thess.4:16-17, 2Thess.1:8-9, Heb.9:27-28, Jude 14-15, Rev.2:7,11,17,26-29, 3:5-6,12-13,21-22, 20:1-22:17
IDENTITY/IDENTIFICATION
This emblem is the unchanging ‘trademark’ of the Covenant and Light Gospel Mission with the following components:
The World: Filled with the knowledge of the glory of God (i.e. the gospel of the Covenant—Restoration and the Light—Reconciliation) as the water covers the sea; and the kingdom of this world shall be the Lord’s. Num.14:21, Ps.72:19, 22:27-28, Is.11:9, 61:11, Hab.2:14, Obadiah 21, Rev.11:15
The Sun: symbolizes light to the gentiles—the unchanging, ever-potent gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. The very Light that shines in the darkness which darkness cannot comprehend. The Sun of Righteousness rising with healing in its wings. Mal.4:2, John 1:5, Acts 26:16-18, Rom.1:16-17; 14:15-16
The Open Bible: represents the book of the Covenant God cuts with His people through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is also the final authority on all issues of life providing for all that makes for our perfection (maturity) in Christ Jesus—in the redemption. Ps.89:34, Zech.2:7-13, 2Tim.3:16-17
The Colours: These are Red and White colours in the background of the emblem.
Red Colour: represents the blood of Jesus Christ as the Seal of the Covenant God cuts with His people. Exo.12:13, 24:8, Zech.9:11, 13:1, Mat.26:28
White Colour: represents holiness / purity of heart without which no one shall see the Lord. It is the pivot of our Mission; the unchanging solid foundation of God and the core of our practices. Ps.15:1-2, 24:3-4, Isa.35:8-10, 2Tim.2:19
POSTSCRIPT
We have a more sure word of prophecy; everyone must be presented perfect (mature) to God in Christ Jesus. To this end, we shall commit our entire lifetime to prayers and the ministry of the word (preaching and teaching the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.) Acts.6:4. This way every believer shall mature in all things unto Christ whose presence in their lives shall be a guarantee that they shall share in God’s glory. Col.1:25-29, Rom.8:29-30. This is to fulfill the prophetic words:
- ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it..’ Isa.2:2-5, Micah 4:1-4, Zech.8:23
- ‘And the glory of this latter house shall surpass the former’ Hag.2:6-9, Num.14:21, Ps.72:19, Is.11:9, 61:11, Hab.2:14, Rev.11:15
- ‘…and I will glorify My house of glory.’ Is.60:7
- ‘For the kingdom shall be the Lord’s; for He is the Governor among the nations.’ Ps.22:27-28, Obadiah 21, Rev.11:15
On 14th November, 1999, the word of the Lord came expressly to His son—Dr. Israel Adeyemi Owoade—from Isaiah 42:6-7. In that experience, God caught his attention and committed into his hands ‘The Covenant and Light Gospel Mission.’
This Mission is mandated of God to ‘…present every man perfect (mature) in Christ Jesus.’ Col.1:28b. Meaning, through this mission, God wants to see everyone looks exactly like Jesus Christ in godly character and in the command of testimonies as they demonstrate the wisdom of God and display the power of God. Jn.15:1-5, 20:21-23, Rom.8:16-17, Acts19:15
This Mission is an apostolic movement through which God carries out His two main duties on the earth today: saving the unsaved and maturing (perfecting) the saints. God’s ultimate goals for doing these are:
- To remove the curse on the earth
- To restore the original relationship that existed in Eden
- To bless all the people on the earth
- That the kingdoms of this world might become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and that He might reign forever and ever.
The Light arm of this Mission has the mandate of proclaiming the gospel of Reconciliation to the unsaved (unbelievers, sinners) through faith in the atoning sacrifice made with the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jn.3:16-18, 14:6; Acts.4:10-12, 26:16-18; 2Cor.5:18-19.
The Covenant arm of this Mission is in two folds reaching out to the saints both as individuals and the church—the collective Body of Christ with the mandate of proclaiming the gospel of Restoration. It reaches out to the individual saints with the more sure new covenant purchased for them with the precious blood of Jesus Christ with a view to seeing them restored to the fullness of Christ’s stature while on the earth as they reflect Him in all ramifications, enjoy every blessing of redemption and make it to heaven in grand style with numerous rewards when their journey on the earth is over. Heb.6:9, 9:11-15, 23-28; Mal.4:2-3, Isa.53, Rev.4:11, 5:12-13, Mat.25:31-40, Rev.2&3
It also reaches out to the church (the Body of Christ ) with the passion of seeing her, irrespective of the denominations, comes to the unity of faith through the bond of peace (2Tim. 3:16-17; Eph.4:3-16), thus pursuing the fulfillment of prophecies written in Deut.26:16-19; Isaiah2:2-5; Micah4:1-5; Hag.2:6-9, Zech.8:23.
We are equally involved in making prayers, supplications and intercessions for the salvation of the lost souls of men, nations, kings and those in authority; advancement and prosperity of mission/evangelistic work; welfare of missionaries and servants of God.
